Clos L'Église is one of the most acclaimed estates in Pomerol, celebrated for its remarkable depth, elegance, and complexity. Although it is not part of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it is regarded as one of the premier wines in Bordeaux. Founded in the 18th century, the estate has exchanged ownership several times, with the Garcin family (owner of Chateau Haut Bergey and Barde Haut) significantly enhancing its reputation since acquirement. The 5.89 hectares of vineyards are situated on the Pomerol plateau, characterized by a blend of gravel, clay, and "crasse de fer," which are ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc, comprising 80% and 20% of the vineyard, respectively.
At Clos L'Église, winemaking marries tradition with modern techniques. The grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted, followed by fermentation in stainless steel vats. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, with 50% to 70% new oak utilized each year. One of the few stars of this soft, consumer-friendly vintage, Clos l'Eglise has fashioned a dark ruby/purple-colored, sexy wine with ostentatious aromas of mocha, fudge, coffee, and sweet berry fruit intermixed with toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, opulently-textured, with low acidity, abundant glycerin, and lovely fruit, this is a triumph for the vintage.
