Château Gruaud Larose is a wine estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc, ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It is widely regarded as a classic Saint-Julien wine. Most releases need 10 to 15 years to be appreciated at their best.
Since its creation, in 1725, four families have succeeded one another at the head of Gruaud Larose: the Gruaud & Larose families, the Balguerie and Sarget families, the Cordier family and the Merlaut family.
Since the vintage 2019, the farming has converted to Organic Farming. Biodynamic tools and practices are also used.
A second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose has also been made since 1979. This is often rated as a bargain, particularly in better vintages.

The 2019 Sarget de Gruaud-Larose has a well-defined bouquet with tertiary red berry fruit, understated initially but gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite tarry with a fair proportion of tobacco and black pepper on the finish. There is quite a lot going on in this wine and it should age well in bottle. (Drinking Window: 2023-2040)
